Resilience

Resilience is the ability to bounce back in difficult times. When you learn resilience you develop what we call the Vitamin C's of Emotional Health: You act on your commitments, you accept and work on challenges in your life, and you know what is in your control.

Commitment:

Are you clear about your most deeply held values? When you need to be resilient, you can face the hard things in your life because you know what is really important. It is possible to do hard things if the reasons for doing them are important. In fact, most of the really important things in life are hard. But working to pursue the important things in life are the source of great joy and satisfaction.

Challenge:

The Chinese character for crisis has two equally valid meanings. It can mean "problem" or it can mean "opportunity." When you are resilient, you look for the opportunities in the difficult circumstances you face. This is a particular way of thinking, that leads to approaching the problems in your life with a willingness to find a solution rather than to avoid them. Resilient individuals see wonderful and exciting challenges.

Control:

Some things are in your control, and some things are not. When you are faced with difficult circumstances, the things that are not in your control are often quite evident. But when you are resilient, you find those things that are in your control, and make a decision to focus on them. You can influence the outcome even if you are not in a position to guarantee what will happen next. Learning what is in your control is a key component of responding to the real life circumstances you face.
